Global semiconductors ushered in the first negative growth for nearly 30 months

Release on : Mar 12, 2019

According to the Semiconductor Industry Association (SIA), sales in the global semiconductor market (3-month moving average) in January 2019 decreased by 5.7% from January 2017 to $35.5 billion (approximately RMB 2,414). 100 million yuan, the first negative growth in 30 months since July 2016, a decrease of 7.2% compared with December 2018.

The monthly sales released by SIA are a three-month moving average, and the sales in January 2018 are the average of the three months of November 2018, December 2018, and December 2019. In terms of monthly sales by WSTS (World Semiconductor Trade Statistics), December 2018 has been reduced by 7.7% from December 2017. Although WSTS does not disclose monthly statistics for January 2019, it should fall into double-digit negative growth. Among them, the price of products in the DRAM market has fallen sharply, and it is now continuing to fall. Therefore, it is expected that the market size after February 2019 will further shrink.

Almost all of the world is in negative growth - the most obvious is China and the United States.

According to regions and countries, compared with the same period of last year, in addition to Europe increased by 0.2%, the United States decreased by 15.3%, Asia Pacific and other regions decreased by 3.8%, China decreased by 3.2%, Japan decreased by 1.5%. Falling into negative growth. In addition, compared with last month (December 2018), all countries and regions have experienced negative growth, as follows: the United States decreased by 13.0% year-on-year, China decreased by 8.5% year-on-year, Japan decreased by 4.7% year-on-year, and Asia-Pacific and other regions decreased year-on-year. 3.6%, Europe decreased by 1.5% year-on-year. The negative growth of China and the United States, which has fallen into the whirlpool of trade wars, is particularly evident.

SIA president's view on the sluggish semiconductor industry

Mr. John Neuffer, president and CEO of SIA, said in the January data release that "in January 2019, the global semiconductor market showed a decreasing trend in all major products and all regions compared with the previous month, obviously 2019 The world semiconductor market has entered a period of recession. However, in the long run, looking forward to the future is still very promising. The adoption rate of semiconductors in consumer products is increasing, and we look forward to artificial intelligence (AI) and virtual reality in the future. VR), IoT, 5G and next-generation communication networks will all become the main driving force for the development of the traction semiconductor market."
